Origin of anniversary


"World Wetland Day" is the day designated to commemorate the Ramsar Convention for the protection of waterfowl, recognizing the value and importance of the increasingly destructive wetlands around the world, in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran It was designated by the Open International Wetland Convention. The Convention entered into force in 1975.


Main contents of Ramsar Convention

The Ramsar Convention consists of 12 articles in the text and the main contents are as follows.


Wetlands are 'swamps and nails' that do not exceed 6 meters in depth in seawater, low tide of fresh water.

Member States are obligated to protect wetlands of transboundary migratory birds and, as a breeding ground, more than one wetland of international importance.


Related activities in Korea

Korea joined the Ramsar Convention on July 28, 1997, and since 2002, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment have held the "World Wetlands Day" ceremony, and it is now 17 times as of 2018 .

As of 2018, a total of 22 wetlands (194.782㎢) are registered and managed by the Ministry of Environment.


Major wetlands in our country

  • Inje Daeamsan Yonggam: The first wetland registered at the 1997 Ramsar Convention
  • Changwon Upo Wet: The largest inland wetland in Korea (21 soccer fields). More than 1,000 species of organisms. Registered Ramsar in 1998
  • Taean Duong wetland: A major wetland that protects the coastal dunes of Sinduri. An endangered species of gold frog. Registered Ramsar in 2007.
  • Muan tidal flat in Jeonnam: White hawk nest and waterbird habitat. Registered Ramsar in 2001.
  • Kochang Ridge Wetland: Where natural resilience can be observed. An endangered otter can be observed. 2011 Ramsar registration
  • Jeju 1100 Highland: A place where you can see Gotjawal, the primeval forest of Jeju Island. 2009 Ramsar registration
